Chapter 5 - L

Sayuri helped me get back to class since I couldn’t see without my glasses. Once we got to the classroom, Sayuri let go of my hand. She rushed to her desk while the teacher continued with his lecture. I walked into the classroom feeling anxious. I couldn’t see anybody’s expression with my impaired vision.

The faces of my classmates were blurry and the only thing I could only see their figures. I made my way towards my desk with extreme difficulty. While walking through the desk, I suddenly felt someone’s foot stick out in front of me. I tripped over the unknown classmate’s foot. I expected to find myself in pain after the fall, but instead I was caught by someone.

If it weren’t for my classmate, I would’ve nearly smashed my head onto the corner of someone’s desk. I stared up at the blurry figure. Since this person’s hair was short, I could tell that he was a boy. I didn’t mean to sniff him, but his scent became evident at a close distance. It’s hard to explain, but his scent reminded me of the warm sun.

It was odd to be caught sniffing people, so I hid my face underneath my long unkempt bangs. Once I was back on my feet, I walked past the stranger to my desk. I sat down at my seat without uttering a single thank you to the stranger. I buried my face in the books that were piled up at my desk covered with swear words. The teacher ignored my presence and continued his lecture.

The day went by smoothly until lunch time came around. The teacher left the classroom and students began chattering all around me. I had a difficult time with today’s lessons. It was difficult to see the board. I relied on listening to the teacher instead of looking at the board. I copied everything the teacher said in my notebook to prevent from falling behind further in class. I can’t afford to get bad grades. My grandparents would definitely stop me from going to school if they found out I wasn’t doing too well in school.

I hurriedly got up from my seat once I found out it was lunchtime. It’d be best if I get out of this classroom before Mikami and his gang decide to pay attention to me. I quickly grabbed my backpack and sprinted towards the exit. I didn’t make it to the door because Mikami was blocking the way. He shouted, “HEY! Where do you think you’re going?” Mikami pulled at my ponytail. My hair came loose.

He laughed, “It’s so funny seeing you without your glasses. You look like a female ghost.” I tried to hide under my hair, but it didn’t work. They were making fun of me even more. I quickly dashed underneath his arms and through the classroom doors. He shouted to his lackeys, “GET HER!” I avoided the boys and sprinted through the long hallway.

Few of the students in the hallway noticed me running full speed ahead towards them. I made sure to dodge them the best I could. Mikami and his crew were fast. I was able to avoid them pretty well. The one good point about me is that I can run fast. I’ve travelled long distances and kept my stamina up to make it to school every day.

Once I reached the end of the hallway, I swiftly turned left and continued running full speed ahead. I have no clue how I’m getting around without my glasses. I think it’s because I’m used to coming to school every day. I knew where I had to go to avoid them. I bumped into a few of my classmates. Some of them tried to stop me from running away from Mikami. A few of my classmates enjoyed bullying me alongside Mikami. I can’t afford to be caught by them!

I know what they’re going to do to me. They usually took me to the rooftop to steal my money and to harass me. There were many occasions when I came home with food all over me. I was lucky enough to not get beaten up by Mikami. He didn’t like to hit girls. That didn’t stop him from harassing me in different ways.

He especially liked to see my angry expressions. It’s his dream to see me cry. I have never cried in front of Mikami because that would only let him win. I never wanted to see him succeed in ruining my life. I would never let myself cry in front of someone like Mikami.

I frantically leapt down the stairs. I noticed Mikami’s crew was approaching. They were inches away from catching up to me. I unfortunately ended up between a pair of lovers about to kiss. Their lips ran smack dab onto both sides of my cheeks. I was sandwiched between the two kissing couples.

I quickly removed the pair of lips that were caught on my cheeks. I rubbed my cheeks in disgust. I ignored the couple’s glares and curses. I dashed towards the school entrance while trying to see if Mikami and his crew were close by. Their blurry figures seemed to be still stuck at the stairway. The couple seemed to be arguing with them.

Once I reached the entrance, I felt someone pull me into a dark corner. I found myself facing someone’s chest. I once again unintentionally sniffed the person in front. He smelled like the warm sun. I instantly knew who it was.
